Frill 2013: 2fast 2frillious

This past weekend, in a somewhat spur of the moment decision, my friend Blaze and I went on a road trip to Frill, a Lolita convention in Atlanta. As far as I'm aware of, it's the only Lolita convention in America, if in the whole world. This is Frill's second year, and the first time for both of us. We really had no idea what to expect, but hey, adventures!
We left Thursday night and after some confusion with the hotel reservation, stayed in Durham overnight before proceeding onto Atlanta (and eating at the southern breakfast chain, Biscuitville). All in all, the drive from Baltimore wasn't too bad. The convention itself was at the Marriott in Decatur, which is a nice, kind of trendy neighborhood outside Atlanta. The convention hotel was full so we stayed a few blocks away (a bearable distance despite the heat). Strangely enough Atlanta's weather was actually cooler than Baltimore.
Anyway, we arrived just in time to participate in the fashion walk. Scurrying over to the hotel, there was quite a crowd of Lolitas assembled, a few girls from Maryland who had flown, and a couple people I'd met online. A few people recognized me, surprisingly! We immediately started talking to random people assembled and made con-friends right away. Blaze knew more people than I because her old community from Florida had also roadtriped over.

The fashion walk was a bit of a confusing stampede of frilly people and less a leisurely walk. I vote that next time there be a parade leader with a sparkly baton, and a marching band. After a tour of the neighborhood (and a lot of people filming us, oddly), we stopped at Vivid Boutique, one of Frill's sponsors and there were snacks and booze. Eventually, Blaze, myself, and two of her Florida friends broke off and got sushi at a nearby restaurant.
Saturday, we got up bright and early to scope out the boutique and go to some panels. I love that there were nothing but Lolita related panels, so different from the one or two (if you're lucky) you might find at a normal con. For example, there was "how to use taobao", "wig care and styling", "cake decorating", "sewing techniques", "old school lolita", the list goes on.

 From the cake decorating panel.

As for shopping, there was an Artist's Alley in the common area, and then a separate room with a boutique. The boutique included consignment clothing (Brand, off brand, handmade) as well as tons of jewelry, shoes, purses, and accessories. I ended up buying tons lavender accessories instead of clothing.

My creepy-cute haul for the weekend:

Blaze and I had both gotten Angelic Pretty's new print Freshly Picked Strawberries, in white, so we decided to twin for the day.

One of my favorite things was that there was a con suite room upstairs for anyone with a badge (there was also a VIP suite for those with VIP badges). It was a lounge room with food (breakfast and lunch/dinner), a TV and comfy chairs. A really nice place to hang out, and thanks to the catering you seriously didn't need to pay for food the whole weekend if you didn't want to. There was also a beer tasting supplied by the Quebec brewery, Unibrew, as part of the "Gentlemen's/Dandies'" programming. Didn't stop me from going though!
That night was the fashion show, featuring many American indie designers as well as Innocent World and Atelier-Pierrot! Blaze modeled for our local friend Michelle's line, Belladonna.

After that it was mostly hanging out and getting some midnight tacos before calling it quits after another long day.
Sunday was a little more low-key, last minute shopping, taking photos with friends, and then the tea party.

I kept up with the strawberry theme, and Blaze went OTT sweet.

All in all, it was an amazing weekend! I would seriously recommend it to any Lolita in the US (or abroad!). If you go to one con next summer, make it Frill! I'd go again in a heartbeat. It was all the good parts of a convention, plus amazing people, free food, fun programming, and frilly parties!

  3. Does anyone here know any other Japanese fashion-oriented blogs? Not just Lolita. I'm trying to find some style icons, and I've found my Lolita, but I need others.

  4. Santas War on Terror - As the name suggests, this platform game sees a very little Saint Nick wage war against some marauding terrorists. While hardly in the spirit of Christmas, this nonetheless might raise a chuckle or two before you delete it from your phone, frustrated by the poor controls and put off by the hideous graphics.
